Ilias Tirodimos, Assistant Professor in Hygiene & Preventive Medicine Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece
Ilias Tirodimos was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1965. He graduated from the Department of Biology (1988) and from Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1997). In 1989 he received his MSc degree in Molecular Biology and Genetic Manipulation from University of Sussex, Brighton,UK. He received his Ph.D. from the Medical School of Aristotle University. In 2005, after examinations, he received the Medical Speciality of Cardiology. In 2005 also, he was appointed Lecturer and in 2011 Assistant Professor of Hygiene & Preventive Medicine.
He teaches Hygiene, environmental and water Microbiology, Preventive Medicine and epidemiological topics to undergraduate and graduate students at the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in relevant seminars / workshops. Dr. Tirodimos has written chapters in books in Hygiene & Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine and has published papers in relevant international peer – reviewed journals. He is reviewer in scientific journals and has taken part in conferences as an invited speaker or being a member of the organizing committee.
The department of Laboratory of Hygiene in which Dr Tirodimos is responsible, examines water quality, investigates water epidemics in Northern Greece and is accreditated according to ISO 17025 (www.ESYD.gr, certificate number 717). Regarding scientific knowledge, the research team of Dr Tirodimos, currently works on water microbiology and detection of microbial pathogens using classical & molecular methods. They use oligo-probes & FISH (Fluorescent in situ Hybridization) to detect water pathogens (both the classical bacterial indicators and emerging pathogens as well). Dr Tirodimos also, takes part in, and organizes epidemiological studies regarding risk factors such as diet, obesity, smoking, alcohol uptake
