Short Overview of the Department
Mission of the 2nd Otorhinolaryngology Department of Aristotle’s University in Thessaloniki, Greece at the General Hospital “Papageorgiou”
The mission of the 2nd Otorhinolaryngology Department is the provision of high quality tertiary health care services for otorhinolaryngologic and head and neck surgery patients. Along with those services the department aims at the production of first-rate scientific, educational and research work, the organization of regional and international courses, seminars and congresses, as well as cooperation with teaching and research institutes in Greece and abroad. As a teaching Department of Aristotle’s University and under the direction of Proff. Markou Konstantinos it tends to undergraduate, postgraduate and residents formal education. The department combines the expertise of highly specialized ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physicians, speech-language pathologists, and auxiliary healthcare professionals to provide clinical care for patients with problems affecting the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck areas of infants, children and adults alike.
History of the Department
The department was founded at 2003 as part of the School of Medicine of Aristotle’s University in Thessaloniki . By 2004 it was located and functioning at the General Hospital “Papageorgiou” in Thessaloniki. The first director was Proff. Georgios Kekkes (2004-2008) who was succeded by As. Proff. Spiridon Metaxas (2008-2011) and Proff. Konstantinidis Ioannis (2011-2016). Since 01/09/2016 and up to today the department is directed by Proff. Markou Konstantinos
Location, clinics and wards
All services are provided in the facilities of the General Hospital “Papageorgiou”
The main ward is located at the first floor of the building B of the main complex and has 16 beds for adults. A second ward for pediatric patients with 4 bed is located on the 4th floor of the same building. There is an outpatient department on the ground floor complete with audiologic equipment and facilities for operation under local anaesthesia. The Audiology and Cochlear implantations centre is located on the first floor. Finally, there are separate facilities for educational conference services and medical council (oncologic) meetings.
Main functions:
- 2 wards with 22 beds in total.

3 Daily Operating room sessions weekly under general anesthesia
1 Daily Operating room sessions weekly under local anesthesia - Full participation on the municipal Emergency room rotation schedule.
- The department operates as one of the most established Cochlear implantation centres in Greece for children and adults having performed the most cochlear implantations in Greece for the past 3 years.
Under the supervision of Proff. Markou Konstantinos ,our services to the community extend with a series of specialized and pioneering for national standards outpatient clinics that adhere to comprehensive otolaryngology as both a starting point and a destination for ear, nose, and throat patients. Most patients have their initial assessment and investigation with our general ear, nose, and throat outpatient clinic before potential referral to other specialists as needed to address specific problems and conditions. Services concentrate on both surgical and non-surgical treatment of a wide variety of ear, nose, throat, head, and neck disorders. Specialist outpatients clinics include:
1)Cochlear implantations clinic :For preoperative evaluation, pre and post operative follow-up as well as speech pathology and psychological support of patients with cochlear implants.
2) Rhinologic clinic for smell and taste disorders: It has been the oldest national and in the Balkan region specialized clinic on that field. Taste and olfaction disorders are being investigated using endoscopy, sniffing sticks, taste strips, rhinomanometry and lateralization tests.
3) Salivary endoscopy clinic: has been the first to operate in Greece. This new, minimally invasive technique allows for the examination of the salivary ducts under endoscopic guidance. Treatments, such as stone removal, duct dilatation, and drug injection, can be done at the same time.
4)Allergic rhinitis clinic: where endoscopy, rhinomanometry and skin prick tests are performed to investigate and monitor the condition.
5)Sleep apnoea and snore lab: with Drug Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE) capability.
6)Hearing and balance clinic: that includes state of the art audiologic testing equipment and balance/vestibular testing equipment
7)Infant Hearing screenting program. A blanket screening program applied for free to all infants.
8)Voice and swallowing surgery
9) Oncology clinic
10) Pediatric Airway Surgery
