PPS "Auditory Processing Disorder"
The new Master programme offered by the School of Medicine (Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) titled ‘Auditory Processing Disorder’ aims at covering the existent educational gap related to the diagnosis and treatment of auditory perception problems, which are independent of auditory sensitivity (audiogram). Watch a brief, informative video on www.apdseminars.gr. The MSc is divided into two specializations. The first is for non-doctors and offers participants both theoretical and practical knowledge through the use of individualized auditory training to people diagnosed with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). The second is for doctors and aims at providing them with the most current knowledge in APD research and enable them to be actively involved in the diagnosis of the disorder through the use of tools standardized for the Greek population. The programme is mainly provided by a small group of educators, equipped with all the latest knowledge concerning the interaction between auditory perception and cognitive functions (memory, attention) and by distinguished professors from abroad.

Specific admission requirements
The program aims at providing students (professionals of health sciences and educators) with all the necessary educational background and specialization in the field of Psychoacoustics, so as to enable them to diagnose and treat Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), with an emphasis being given on Autism, Schizophrenia, Hearing loss and Learning difficulties.
The program can be attended by two potential categories of candidates:
a. For the first specialization entitled reatment of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)- Psychoacoustic applications in Autism, Schizophrenia, Hearing loss and Learning difficulties he following graduates can be accepted: Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Special Education teachers, Psychologists, Musicologists- graduate students of Greek Universities or foreign universities (whose studies abroad have been recognized by the Greek Government).
b. For the second specialization entitled agnosis of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)- Psychoacoustic applications in Autism, Schizophrenia, Hearing loss and Learning difficulties edical graduates with or without specialization can be accepted (ENTs, pediatricians, psychiatrists, neurologists, general doctors etc.)- graduate students of Greek Universities or foreign universities (whose studies abroad have been recognized by the Greek Government).
In order for the candidates to participate in the selection process they need to provide proof of knowledge of a foreign language (at least at a B2 level, according to the Common European Framework). Candidates who are native speakers of a second language do not have to certify the knowledge of a second language.
Qualification requirements and regulations, profile of the programme, key learning outcomes and occupational profiles
The program will be held in the Greek language (interviews, courses, examination period etc.). An exception to that are lectures given by invited professors from abroad- these lectures will be held in English. However, students may opt to write their dissertations either in the Greek or in the English language.
The postgraduate students need to complete 30 ECTS/semester to receive their degree at the end of the program.
The program has 90 ECTS in total according to the European Credit Transfer System. It consists of 2 full time semesters and a third semester which includes the clinical laboratory (attended according to each student specialization) as well as the dissertation. The program consists of 6 mandatory courses, three (3) in the first semester and three (3) in the second. The courses offered in the first semester are common for the two specializations, while in the second semester courses are differentiated per specialization.
The third (3rd) semester includes:
a) For the first specialization (non-medical graduate students) clinical laboratory with an individualized program of auditory training. The postgraduate students will practise in applying exercises of auditory training on children and adults with a special focus being given on cases of Autism, Schizophrenia and Learning difficulties. On completion of the program, students will be able to combine the knowledge they will receive throughout the program in order to be effective with regard to the intervetion to be followed in various APD cases.
b ) For the second specialization (medical graduate students) clinical laboratory focusing on the diagnostic approach of children and adults who experience attention deficits, memory deficits, concentration problems, communication problems, learning difficulties, speech perception in noise problems either followed or not by comorbid conditions (dyslexia, ADHD, Autism Spectrum, LDL/SLI etc.). On completion of the program, students will be able to combine the knowledge they will receive throughout the program in order to be effective with regard to proper APD diagnosis.
c) Dissertation
Professional status (if applicable)
The postgraduate program Auditory Processing Disorder offers the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge which enables students of the first specialization to successfully apply individualized therapeutic intervention through the use of auditory training to people with APD (children and adults) and the students of the second specialization to successfully diagnose Auditory Processing Disorder in children and adults.
Access to further studies
The postgraduate program Auditory Processing Disorder offers both the essential academic background and the appropriate clinical knowledge to enable students to continue their studies in a PhD level in the field of Psychoacoustics.
Examination regulations, assessment and grading
Students are graded based on a 10-grade scale (0-10) and on completion of their studies they receive their diploma with the following labelling according to a fixed grading scheme presented below (Υ.Α. Φ.1231/Β1/425,ΦΕΚ 1099/2000/Β, article 60):
Excellent : 8,50 - 10,00
Very good : 6,50 - 8,49
Good : 6,00 - 6,49
Insufficient : 0,00 - 5,99
The minimum grading score to successfully pass a course is (six) 6,00 (according to the regulation concerning all postgraduate programs in A.U.T.H.)
:
Graduation requirements
3 semesters , 90 ECTS
Each academic year corresponds to 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) and each semester corresponds to 30 ECTS (1 ECTS=2 7 hours of workload) (according to the adjustment of the Greek legislation to the European one, Υ.Α. Φ5/89656/Β3, ΦΕΚ 1466/2007/Β, articles 1-3). Each course receives a fixed number of ECTS (>=2) which is determined by the workload needed (on the part of the student) for the completion of the particular course, laboratory, clinical practice etc.
