SHORT BIOGRAPHY

o   She was born in 1962, she graduated from the 2nd Lyceum for Girls of Volos in 1979 with a grade "Very good" and she got the Degree in Medicine, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 1986 with a degree of "Very good". During her studies she received a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (1984-1985).

o   In December 1986 she obtained the license to practice medicine from the Medical Association of Thessaloniki and in April 1988 she obtained the license to practice medicine in Germany (Approbation).

o   She completed her doctoral dissertation at the Department of Endocrinology and the Endocrinology Laboratory of the Paediatric Hospital (von Haunershes Kinderspital) of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany under the supervision of Prof. O. Butenandt (04.1988-07.1990) and in July 1990 she was awarded a doctorate diploma with a degree “magna cum laude”. In August 1993, the doctoral diploma was recognized in Greece (DIKATSA).

o   In January 1994 she obtained her degree in Paediatrics after training at the Paediatric Hospital (von Haunershes Kinderspital) of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany under the direction of Prof. H-B. Hadorn (2 years: 10.1988-09.1990) and at the 2nd Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at AHEPA University General Hospital under the direction of Prof. D. Katriou – Nikolakaki (2 years: 07.1991-11.1993).

o   She attended for 12-month postgraduate course of Organization and Management of Health Services within the Programs of Supplementary Distance Education Programme (E-Learning) of the Centre of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece (09.2015-09.2016).

TRAINING-SPECIALIZATION IN PAEDIATRIC ENDOCRINOLOGY·       

o   She was specialized as a postdoctoral researcher from 10.1990 to 06. 1991 (9 months) in Paediatric Endocrinology at the Department of Endocrinology and Outpatient Unit of the Paediatric Hospital (von Haunershes Kinderspital) of Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Germany.

o   From 01.1994 to 01.1995 (12 months) she was specialized in Diabetology at the Diabetology Centre of the 1stDepartment of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at the AHEPA University General Hospital.

o   From 07.2000 to 02.2001 (7 months) she was trained with postgraduate leave as a Consultant in National Health System in Paediatric Endocrinology - Diabetology at the Endocrinology Department of the Paediatric Hospital (von Haunershes Kinderspital) of Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, Germany.

o   Total training in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology 2 years and 4 months, 1 year and 4 months abroad and 1 year in Greece.

o   In the framework of the Scientific Cooperation Agreements between the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece and other European Universities, she visited the Departments of Endocrinology of the Paediatric Clinics of the University of Cologne (Prof. Eckhard Schönau 10.2004-11.2004) and University Leipzig (Prof. Wieland Kiess 12.2009 and 12.2011), Germany.

o   In 2008, as part of her interest in Adolescent Medicine, she attended Intensive Education on Adolescent Health and Adolescent Care at the University of Lausanne (European Training in Effective Adolescent Care and Health: EuTEACH), Switzerland in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

WORK EXPERIENCE

o   She provided her health care services in all stages of professional development without interruption.

o   She served as a General Practitioner, Rural Medical Service-Primary Healthy Care, Health Care Facility of Eretria, Larissa, Greece (04.1987-04.1988).

o   She provided her health care services for 5 years as a scientific collaborator at the 4th Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at AHEPA University General Hospital (01.1994-01.1999).

o   In January 1999, she started to work as a Consultant for the National Health System at the 4th Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at AHEPA University General Hospital and she provided her health care services until August 2002 (3 years and 6 months).

o   From August 2002 to November 2007 (5 years and 3 months) she served as Lecturer in Paediatrics with emphasis on Paediatric Endocrinology, from November 2007 to February 2014 (6 years and 3 months) as Assistant Professor of Paediatrics-Paediatric Endocrinology and from February 2014 to June 2018 (4 years and 4 months) as Associate Professor of Paediatrics- Paediatric Endocrinology at the 4th Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at Papageorgiou General Hospital. In February 2018 she was elected Professor of Paediatrics-Paediatric Endocrinology and in June 2018 she took over duties.

o   Since September 2019, she is the Head of the 2nd Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at the AHEPA University General Hospital.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Regarding her clinical experience, from 1999 until today (21 years) she serves continuously in a salaried position in a University Department of Paediatrics. Her clinical work was practiced from all the positions she held at the 4th Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, at Papageorgiou General Hospital providing her health care services in general Paediatrics as head of the General Paediatrics ward and by participating in the on-duty program of the Department as well as specialized clinical work in Paediatric endocrinology and diabetes. She organized and was in charge of Outpatient Unit (Paediatric Endocrinology and Paediatric Diabetes) of the Department. In addition, she was responsible for paediatric patients with endocrine problems hospitalized at the Department. She also gave paediatric endocrinology consultation at the 2ndDepartment of Paediatric Surgery and the 2nd Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at Papageorgiou General Hospital.

Today she is in charge of the regular Outpatient Clinics (Paediatric Endocrinology and Paediatric Diabetes) at the AHEPA University General Hospital and the Head of the 2nd Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at the AHEPA University General Hospital.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

She has been teaching since the beginning of her career at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Undergraduate

o   Initially during the 8 years 1994-2002, she participated in the training of students and residents in Paediatrics as well as in all the scientific activities of the Department of Paediatrics, initially as a scientific collaborator (01.1994-01.1999) and then as a Consultant of the National Health System (02.1999-08.2002).

o   She taught independently for 1 academic year (1995-1996) the course of Paediatrics in the Department of Midwifery, School of Health and Welfare Professions, Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, Greece.

o   She participated in the Postgraduate courses of the Diabetology Centre of the 1st Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at the AHEPA University General Hospital during the academic year 1994-1995.

o   As a member of Teaching and Research Staff, she teaches to undergraduate students of the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece of the 10th, 11th and 12th semesters from 2002 until today (Paediatrics IA0323, Paediatrics IA0325).

o   From 09.2002 to 06.2016 she was responsible for organizing the education of 6th year medical students (training program, written and oral exams). She also actively participated in the examination process (creation of exam questions) of medical students as she was a member of the interdisciplinary examination committee of the Departments of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece for this period. As the person in charge of the educational program of the 4th Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at Papageorgiou General Hospital she contributed as a supervisor to the elaboration of 20 medical student works that were announced at the medical students conferences.

o   Since 06.2016 she is ECTS Coordinator of undergraduate incoming medical students with the ERASMUS program from various European countries. In addition, she participates in the teaching of Paediatrics in English to ERASMUS students as well as to foreign students HELMSIC-IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Students’ Association). For this activity, she was honoured with a Commendation of Excellence of the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2017) and an Award of the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2018).

o   She participated in the creation of exam questions for the course of Paediatrics in the Examination Committee of the Interdisciplinary Organization for the Recognition of Academic Degrees and Information (D.O.A.T.A.P.).

Postgraduate

o   In the training of residents in Paediatrics of the 4th Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at Papageorgiou General Hospital and of other departments in Paediatric endocrinology and diabetes issues from 1999 until today.

Participation in committees of doctoral dissertations and postgraduate theses

 
 

 

o   She is the first supervisor in 9 doctoral dissertations and a member of three-member and seven-member committees of the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece; 

o   She participated in 10 diploma theses of the Postgraduate Study Program of the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece “Medical Research Methodology”; in 7 of them as the first supervisor. 

o   Within the Postgraduate Program "Care for Diabetes" of the Department of Nursing, School of Health and Welfare Professions, Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, Greece she participated in 6 diploma theses, in 5 of them as the first supervisor. 

RESEARCH PROJECT

Her research interests focus on Paediatric Endocrinology and especially on the study of growth hormone, hyperinsulinaemia, obesity and diabetes. Her research work consists of the preparation of her doctoral dissertation, her participation in a research program on the growth hormone receptor, her participation in the International Clinical Study KIGS, her participation in the clinical study Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Growth Hormone Therapy. She has participated in 3 European Multicentre Research Programs (1 for the genetics of type 1 diabetes, 1 for Obesity Genetics, 1 for the influence of forest in health - Forest, Trees, and Human Health and Well Being, COST E39, supported by the EU Framework Program 2006). She is scientifically responsible for research programs managed by the Research Program of the Special Account for Research Funds (S.A.R.F.) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She was scientifically responsible for the program entitled "Integrated System of Health Promotion Actions of the Municipality of Ampelokipi-Menemeni for the fight against obesity and eating disorders in adolescents", which is part of the Operational Program for Human Development 2007 of the European Union (Completion of project 2015).

AWARDS-DISTINCTIONS

To date she has been awarded 20 awards (19 Greek and 1 international), 1 prize and 1 commendation for scientific work. Among the awards, the Athens Academy Award (2003, Natural Sciences) is remarkable.

ORGANIZATIONAL-ADMINISTRATIVE WORK

Her organizational and administrative experience includes the following:

o   In addition to the outpatient unit for patients with endocrine problems and diabetes, she organized the Paediatric endocrinology and diabetes department at the clinic where she served.

o   She participated in the Organizing Committee as President, General Secretary or member of 3 International and 26 Greek conferences, courses, workshops. She participated in the Scientific Committee in 17 Greek conferences, courses, and workshops.

o   She was a member of the Editorial Committee of the Newsletter Editorial Team of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) and the Journal of Atherology. She has been a reviewer in 24 international journals of Paediatrics, Paediatric endocrinology, diabetes and adolescent medicine and in 3 Greek journals. She was also a member of the editorial board of the journal Paediatrics of Northern Greece (2003, 2004).

o   She also participates and contributes to the evaluation of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

o   Today, she the Head of the 2nd Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at the AHEPA University General Hospital, President of the Paediatric Society of Northern Greece, Secretary of the Greek Society of Adolescent Medicine, Secretary of the Greek Society for Research and Treatment of HPV and member of the Growth Hormone Administration Approval Committee Growth Hormone of the Supreme Health Council (A.Y.S.).

SOCIAL WORK

Her social work consists of:

o   Voluntary participation in the years 1994, 1995, 1996 in special camps for children with diabetes as a paediatrician specialized in Diabetology. She published popular articles about diabetes and the short child in local newspapers.

o   She participated as a member of the Association of Organ Donors (EDOSA) in informative speeches.

o   She gave informative speeches at events of the associations: a) Association of parents of children and adolescents with diabetes of Northern Greece b) Association of patients with Diabetes "Agios Dimitrios", Thessaloniki, Greece c) Associations of diabetes of various prefectures of Northern Greece.

o   She participated with informative lectures on childhood obesity and adolescent health-adolescent medicine in health education events at various secondary schools in Thessaloniki.

o   She organized (11.2017) together with the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Central Macedonia and the Association of Parents of Children and Youth with Diabetes a special seminar for school nurses responsible for the care of children with diabetes. Within the framework of the training course, a special issue entitled "School Nurses' Manual for the Management of Type 1 Diabetes at School" (2018) was published, which has been submitted to the Institute of Educational Policy of the Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs for approval to be posted to the site of Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Central Macedonia. The course was held after invitation of school nurses of Western Macedonia in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Western Macedonia and the Association of Parents of Children and Young People with Diabetes. The training course for nurses was also held after invitation of the Cyprus Diabetes Association in Nicosia, Cyprus. For her contribution to the education of school nurses, she was awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (05.2019)

o   Under the auspices of the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece she organized the Parents' Academy (2018) in collaboration with the Adolescent Health Unit of the 2nd Department of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece at Aglaia Kyriakou Hospital, the 2nd Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Health Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece at AHEPA University General Hospital and the Paediatric Association of Northern Greece.
