My teaching work extends to undergraduates, graduates and lifelonglearning.

Basic Research:

My basic research activities are:

1.    Ocular cells cultivation and study of their properties.

2.    Nanotechnology applications in Ophthalmology

The former yelded five published papers and two further are under review. A PhD is in process. This basic research is conducted with the collaboration of the University Eye Clinic Erlangen (Head: Prof. F.E. Kruse). I also trained at this clinic for six months (01.2009 – 05.2009)

The latter activity is taking place in co-operation with the Department of Physics (Head: Prof. A. Logothetidis). An original article is under review, while two other posters were presented in the two last annual meetings of ESCRS. Regarding nanotechnology in Ophthalmology, I supervised two MSc theses while another one is under consideration.

Clinical research

My clinical research activity, which is supported by the Department of Anterior Segments of the 2nd Ophthalmologic Clinic of AUTH, is related to:

1. Design of IOLs-Clinical application of premium IOLs

2. Preoperative assessment of the crystalline lens density.

3. Development and evaluation of a risk factor score for phacoemulsification.

4. Education in Ophthalmic surgery

C.             Clinical work

·      I participate in all clinical activities of the 2nd Department of Ophthalmology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from its inception until today.

·       I am the lead consultant - assigned by the Director of Clinic– of the Department of Anterior Segment. (2008 to date).

·      I performed more than 4000 surgeries regarding eye’s anterior segment (appx400/year)

·      I officiate as Director when Prof.S.A. Dimitrakos is absent.

D.             Administrative work

Participation in several committees of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (appointed by the office of the Rector).


  • Since 2010 I am a member of the Department of European Educational Program (DEEP)(http://www.auth.gr/committee/1040). My appointment was extended for an additional 4-year period by the newly-elected Rector (Prof. P. Mitkas).

Participation in different committees of the Medical School AUTH:


  • ECTS Coordinator of Medical School (2011 until now).

  • Administrator for the Collaboration with the Following Universities (Erasmus): Bonn, Bochum, Düsseldorf and Saarbrucken.

  • The most significant work in these 3 years was my contribution towards the achievement of the Diploma Supplement.

·      Member of the internal evaluation Committee of the Medical School under administration of the Quality Assurance Unit (MO.D.I.P) Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Head: Prof G. Karakioulakis).

·      Member of Reconsideration at the Education Programme of the Medical School AUTH.

·      Chair of the website committee of the Faculty of Medicine, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Σύντομο βιογραφικό: 

I was born in Vienna/Austria on 3rd of March 1960.
I graduated from the medical School of Aristotle University Thessaloniki in November 1986 with grade “excellent”.
May 1987-August 1989: I started the residency of Ophthalmology in Germany funded by a DAAD scholarship.
September 1989-August 1991: I finished my residency training at the Harlaching-Munich Hospital.
In June 1991, I obtained the license to practice “Ophthalmology” in Germany. This title was recognized in Greece (31.12.1991). After the Residency training I stayed in Germany for one additional year. During that period I was specialized in the novel technique of Phacoemulsification, while my research interest that period was Intraocular Lens (IOL’s) design.
In June 1992, MD Thesis at Munich University entitled: “Retrospective Data analysis of Cataract surgery with Phacoemulsification.”
In August 1992, I returned to Greece and joined the Greek Army.
Ø  November 1993-February 1995: Rural service as a General Practitioner.
Ø  April 1995-September 2002 I was employed in the Komotini General Hospital in Ophthalmology Department. (1995-2000: Consultant B’, 2000-2002: Consultant A’)
Ø  April 2004: I was elected Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the Medical School of Aristotle University in Thessaloniki (unanimously among 5 candidates)
Ø  April 2004 till present: I am working and teaching at the 2nd University Eye Department, Papageorgiou Hospital, (Head: Prof. S.A. Dimitrakos).
Ø  February 2010: I was elected Assistant Professor (unanimously)
Ø  July 2014: Associate Professor (substantive post)
