Programme of study

PPS "Salivary Gland Disorders"

The Department of Medicine at the School of Health Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki operates the Postgraduate Program (Master's) entitled "Salivary Gland Disorders" (Publication Code 25982/24.5.2021). The purpose of the Master's program is to educate postgraduate students in the management of salivary gland disorders. Salivary glands and their disorders constitute a significant part of the daily clinical practice of many specialties, including Otorhinolaryngology, Maxillofacial Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatrics, General Pathology, Oncology, as well as imaging specialties such as Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. The diversity of specialties involved in the treatment of these disorders demonstrates the breadth and complexity in the modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to salivary gland disorders. The cognitive scope of the Master's program includes surgical anatomy of salivary glands as essential knowledge for physicians who may need to intervene surgically in this area, their physiology-pathophysiology, pathology in both children and adults, diagnostic approach, and therapeutic possibilities (surgical, minimally invasive, and pharmacological) available to date. Specifically, postgraduate students will be trained in minimally invasive methods such as sialendoscopy and local injections within the salivary glands, as well as pharmacological options for treating inflammatory conditions. The start of the courses is scheduled every October, and the language of instruction for both courses and the writing of the dissertation will be Greek. The duration of the program is three (3) academic semesters, leading to the award of a Postgraduate Degree (M.Sc.) upon successful completion of the dissertation in the field of "Salivary Gland Disorders." The Master's program is credited with a total of 90 ECTS, according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, and provides a unified curriculum. As part of the education of postgraduate students, two practical exercises will take place on cadaveric specimens. The first focuses on surgical techniques on major salivary glands, and the second on sialendoscopy.
