Abstract | Patients with cholestatic liver diseases such as primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy commonly complain of pruritus. The underlying pathogenesis remains obscure with several mediators possibly playing an important role; these include lysophosphatidic acid, bile salts, opioids, histamine and progesterone metabolites. We describe in this review novel insights into the pathogenesis and management of pruritus in patients with cholestasis. |
